Why get rid of the moss. It doesn't need mowing. It stays green. You can walk all over it without harm to it. And it is softer than grass on your feet. I wish it would grow more in my yard but it take a lot of shade. Something we do not have a lot of.

I live in the city and have neighbors, so having a decent lawn is not only expected, but nice for me to enjoy as well. I don't see any reason why free-range chickens and grass can't co-exist. Yes, they like to dig, but I find that they prefer to find locations at the outer reaches of my gardens.

The lime would probably take care of your moss and adjust the acidity of your soil. You might want to consider picking up a soil test. For feeding your grass, alfalfa makes a great lawn fertilizer. I buy it in 50 lb. bags from the feed store and use my lawn spreader to put it on the grass. I prefer Meal vs. Pellets, but I'm sure either works just fine. It's cheap, really high in nitrogen and breaks down pretty fast after it rains. And if the chickens eat it I don't worry. Also, I have a mulching mower, so I mulch the grass clippings (also high in nitrogen) and then leave them instead of bagging. Set your blade height to 3 inches MINIMUM and let your grass be a little longer so that it can retain more moisture. Maybe this will help. Good luck!
