Hello Vickischics, he is 1 year and 1 month old. I'm not sure what you mean by "how many roosters timeshare your females"? I have a ratio of 4 pullets : 1 cockerel. For right now, I bought them a saddle already so I think they should be good and they are currently doing good!
Thank you for your reply. I realized my talk textd messed up.
I didn't mean to say "timeshare"! Lol.
What talk text was suppose to say was: How many Roosters per Hens do you have?
Over mating in small flocks is a common concern. One Cockerel(<1y/o) or Rooster(>1 y/o) will mate 10-30 times in 24 hours (1 day).
Therefore, it is commonly recommended to have 1 Cockerel/Rooster per 10 Pullets/Hens. Yes, he will pick his favorite but, he will share the wealth around while giving the girls a break.
It's great that you purchased saddle aprons for your 4 Pullets.
But, please consider the heat and keep them well hydrated and offer cooling foods such as cold watermelon ect..Even though it's probably a cute piece of material, it does get Hot.
Now that the 1:4 ratio is known, myself and others will recommend chicken math and suggest adding a minimum of 6 more girls.
The 1:10 ratio recommendation will help protect your current girls from being repeatedly pinned down, bit on the neck while his spurs dig into their sides 10-30 times a day for mating purposes.
Over mating is a very common reason for the broken feather shafts that aren't healing nor growing back.
Hope this ratio recommendation helps.
