So I recently moved my chickens into a new more user friendly coop approximately 300 yards away from their old coop. The old coop was in my barn. The chickens are free range and would come and go through a chicken door in the wall as they please. The issue was they would then go in the barn (the part of the barn that wasn't the chicken coop) to lay their eggs and poop all over the hay pile. I didnt want chicken manure in the hay (steers and horses don't appreciate that) or the hassle of the daily egg hunt so I built them a stand alone coop on skids away from the barn. I made the move about three days ago. I locked the chickens in the coop for all three days to hopefully reorient them to their new coop. Today I opened the coop door to let them out they came out and mulled around the outside of the new coop for about 15 min. and then about half of them headed straight back to the old coop. I would just close the old coop off so they cant get in but I have my laying ducks in there and they need to roam too. Anybody have any ideas to encourage them to stay by their new coop? I considered fencing but I really don't want to have to deal with fencing if I don't have to.
Thanks!
