Chickie Chalet Under Construction

This coop for my silkies (lucky hens and roos) is taking so long! But as you can see I think it will be worth the wait. DH has never built anything before so he is learning as he goes. He is adding a storage unit on the other side (not pictured) and has been painstakingly painting on the color as he goes. The coop has a second floor for nesting, and is divided into two separate spaces, one for each set of silkies or bantams. The back of it will have hinges for easy clean out.

We were thinking about putting some kitchen flooring on the bottom of the floor to keep the wood from getting wet.

Your DH is doing a great job, especially for someone not used to building. Looks nice. Very cute design.

Might want to think about sloping the roof away from the run/pen or water will drip down into the pen when it rains - may not be a problem if it's sprinkling but if you get a deluge then the run will get a lot of water collecting from the roof and pouring into the pen.

Thats going to be beautiful! I was thinking the same thing on the roof, tho. And great that he's using hardware cloth...strong and sturdy to protect your babies from bad guys.

I mentioned that to DH, he didn't want the roof sloping the other way cause he didn't want water pouring on me when I opened it in the back. We may extend the roof further to the end of the pen, but the water would help clean out the bottom. The bottom of the pen is all hardware cloth that is attached at the top of the bottom boards so they cannot swim or destroy the grass, but can be easily hosed out! So the chickies are elevated from the very bottom.
