Chicks and Grit--Normal Behavior? Update to add: They're OK!

Sugar water is only given for one day to shipped chicks to help give them a burst of energy....Grit is not needed for chicks, their starter/grower has everything they need...Adults yes if they are not free ranged or have access to a dirt run....

Is it really necessary to give sugar water? I got mine at tractor supply right after they arrived. They seem very active.

When picked up from a post office to your own home from a hatchery most give sugar water for a boost of energy after being in a shipping box for acouple days without food/water..

Not it is not neccesary. It is only used as a quick boost for very stressed chicks.

Our chicks go outside from day one, we have a heat lamp in the chick house, but when it is warm they have access to a penned in area where I have plently of sand for them to peck at, dig or whatever they want to do. Never had a need to give a chick grit or sugar water maybe add some natural raw apple cider vinegar to the water.
