We buy every 3 months abt 100 chicks from a hatchery for selling once they are 3 months old. The first time was succesful with 3 deaths from 100 which was good. The second time, now, we are in trouble.
First of all we keep our pet chickens in a separate hen house at another end of the yard from those we rear to sell. The first time it was spring, hot, but nothing compared to now, being summer.
On sunday we took three 3 month old chicks to keep and put them with our pets.
Tuesday evening was the first we noticed anything wrong in the 'selling' chicks. Some chicks were looking drowsy and ddnt even move when we came near. Yesterday we had 20+ dead. Today we have about 20 left.
Thats not all, the worst part is that the 3 chcks we brought got sick too! 2 died by this morning and 1 is lame and worse still is that our hen is gone lame too! :-( we let loose the bantams and rooster (a big walled yard) hoping to get them saved.
My husband is sure its a disease and i think its th heat.
Its extremely hot, like an oven outside. According to weather forecast, 36'C.
They are beeing fed chick growing meal and the adults mixed poultry feed. They get new water 5 times daily. The only sympotms are loss of appetite and lameness. I hope i coverd everything and you can advise me what you think could be wrong.
