Chicks freaking out

My chicks are out all day in a run, separated from the big chicks...see, not touch to get them used to each other. Tonight I tried getting them into a coop (a wire dog carrier covered with a tarp with bedding inside) and they freaked. Screamed, huddled next to me, tried to get out. I gave up and brought them back inside. I can't get another coop right now. The 3 adult chickens sleep in the coop. If the chicks scream at night, every predator in the area will come. Help!!!

You need to secure that crate to make sure it's predator-proof, then let them ride the night out. They will scream, and your first instinct will be to bring them back in. The only way to get them acclimated to coop-life is to leave them in it, and stand your ground. They will be just fine if you've secured their space.
