Hi Chickengr, if I'm understanding correctly the eggs are hatching under your broody hen on day 17 correct? It is not uncommon for broody eggs to hatch a day or so earlier in my experience. And when I had Silkies, my broody momma's hatched chicks on day 19/20 all the time. I suspect that your eggs are probably staggered just a bit, maybe by a couple of days & with your increased summer temps some of your eggs are hatching early. As long as broody momma doesn't forgo taking care of her hatched babies while still sitting on remaining eggs I wouldn't worry. Give it a day or so to see if any of the other 4 eggs pip. If the hatched babies start moving about & the other eggs haven't hatched yet I personally would be candling the remaining eggs to see if there is life. If the eggs are viable & look like the are going to hatch soon you can always add a small dish of food & a chick waterer close by to broody momma & hatched chicks. If the candled eggs don't look as mature as what they should be you will probably need to set up a incubator or something for the eggs. Otherwise you run the risk of momma being neglectful of the hatched babies. Best of luck & congrats on the new babies. Would love to see pictures of all the babies when the hatch is over.hi,
my broody araucana has just become a mom. 2 hatched, 1 hatching, 4 left. the chicks are silkies. it has been hot lately (summer temperatures). should I be concerned?

That's great, fingers crossed for the last 2 to hatch, but if not you've got 5 little fluff butts to spoil. Would love to see some chick pictures when momma is finally taking them out of the nest. Best of luck with your fuzz babiesthank you.
3 chicks hatched on day 17, 1 on day 18, 1 just hatched (day 20). I candeled eggs, they are dark but I didn't hear any noise from the remaining 2.
luckily the nest is too tall for silkie chicks to come out so the broody is forced to stay in. I give them feed and water inside the nest (small quantities a few times a day so that they cannot spill it). if the other 2 eggs don't hatch I will move them to a big cage where they will be safe and have more room. there are about 10 cats and 5 kittens around so they must be well protected.
