I have a chick hatching in my incubator but its only made a tiny hole and its been trying to get out all day. I can see its beak moving but it seems to be breathing hard. Is it normal for them to take so long? Will it eventually come out or is it too weak?

I would leave it till the am if no further advance toward getting out of the shell I would investigate further.

Often chicks can take up to 24 hours between pip and hatch. Often times they are still absorbing the yolk and the membranes are drying/receeding. They do a lot of resting in between stages as well. Mine seem to average between 12-18 hours between the pip and zip. I've had a couple go to 20. I personally would give them at least 18 hours before nosing around unless the chick seems abnormally stressed.

Thanks for the help, the chick hatched and is doing good!!
