Chicks or 2 month olds?

We live in North Carolina with fairly mild winters although it does on ocassion get down into the teens in February.
I will be ready to grow my first batch of 6-12 starting in November. My question is ...should I attempt to raise from chicks or purchase birds 2-3 month old. My Coop is able to accomodate either. Is there any time that is the best time to start out?

To start in the spring would be more natural. Can you get chicks or pullets in November?

I think it would be more gratifying to raise them from chicks, although it's a long wait for any eggs.
