I'm a first time chickeneer, and will be picking up three chicks from a hatchery this weekend. I'm beyond excited. Is anyone else getting their chicks this weekend? Any advice for this newbie?

First, I must say congratulations! You're going to love having chickens too! Welcome to BYC too! So glad you joined us here! I'm sure you know that you must keep them warm, with a heat lamp. Until they get fully feathered, they are vulnerable. I'm sure you know to get some chick starter as well. You will find lots of info here, and lots of nice people as well. Enjoy your endeavor! Have fun!

Thanks so much! It's so hard to believe they are almost here. I bought a heat lamp, but eventually decided to use an EcoGlow as a heat source. I'm curious to see how that will work out. Gathering all the welcome home items has been a lot of fun. I'm SO ready to be a chick mommy!

I will be getting some chicks from tractor supply this weekend (if they have the breeds I am interested in of course). I think they have a minimum of 6 chicks so with that in mind I am hoping to get at least 3 Buff Orpingtons and I will probably just pick what ever chicks look the best for the other 3

I'll have to post pics because everyone loves to see pictures of chicks (especially here on BYC)

On a side note, What area of Detroit are you from?

Six chicks sound so great! I live in Ferndale, just north of Detroit. Here, we are allowed three hens.

I stopped at TSC in Milford a couple weeks ago, and the chicks were adorable. We ordered three chicks from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio. We are getting a French Black Copper Marans, a Dominique and an Olive Egger.

Best of luck with your little fuzzballs!!
