Hi all! I recently got a Silver Sebright Bantam chick (with 3 others of different breeds) and I noticed she had some weird droppings stuck around her toenails. Just her toenails. The droppings were normal except they were hard. I wanted to get them off so she could walk and I think a toenail came off with it! I feel so awful because it made her bleed and I didn't know what to do. The bleeding stopped and it was small but I don't know how to get the rest of the droppings off to help her out. Maybe a wet cloth?
I was hoping to use her for show and I'm worried the toenail might not grow back. Do toenails grow back and if so what are the chances of it never growing back? Thanks in advance!

I’m afraid it’s might be bumble foot or leg mites. Thoughts?

I don’t know what this is but last year at farm city day I was with the chickens and someone had brought some chicks and they all had that on their toes.

Toe nails do grow back but if toe is missing, well it won’t. we rescued several birds from a person that neglected them. Several were missing their toe nails or in some cases toes. To clean their feet we hold their feet in warm water until the poo softens up and then we used a soft/medium bristle tooth brush. They are now 8-10 months old. They have been very happy even if they are missing a toe. They get around just fine and are able
To perch just fine. Keep an eye on the toe for infection. We didn’t use anything on the wounds just kept an eye on them and used dawn soap and water every now and then as needed to remove and remaining crud.

People who cram as many chicks into a container with no shavings or straw on the bottom. They get really covered and it dries out. It can happen to the best owners when chicks huddle together well if one bird poops and they don’t move and it dries out it happens. Soak feet in warm water till it softens hold the bird in place or get a papertowel wet and hold it on the poo till it softens up.

Thank you all!
We soaked them in an epsom salt bath for a couple minutes each. Then we did it again. We put tea tree oil on their feet. Any other suggestions? There are no black scans but it’s definitely bumblefoot. They all have it and their feet are a little swollen.

I’m definitely not one of those ‘best owners’ but they did have shavings and straw. I just cleaned and rinsed the entire brooder box and there was nothing on the bottom, it didn’t smell. No evidence of any infection. I don’t get it. A couple looked like they had fluffy feathers (not from cold.) so I put 3/4 teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in 1 cup of water.
