I found an abandoned egg and was getting ready to dispose of it when I looked and there is a baby chicken pecking it's way out. It seems to be having a problem getting out. I've left it all day, and it's still not getting much bigger of a hole. Usually, all her chicks manage okay. Does anyone have any suggestions? Will I kill it if I help it? Will I kill it if I don't? It may be too dry. ???

I read on here from another BYC member if it isn't strong enough to get out of the egg then it just wasn't meant to be.

I just leave mine alone and tonight for the 1st time I had a egg with a big hole and my poor silkie chick died inside. I just tell myself I have 5 healthy ones walking around in the brooder now and I am happy with that.

Hi, and thanks.
I figured that was probably the answer. One time, however, I had a chick that seemed to be stuck and the film was pretty dry. With a small amount of help with that, he was just fine. I think if they cannot get a hole in the egg, there is a basic developmental problem. This little guy died, and just was not ready to be born. Thanks for the input. These chickens this year have been weird. Having babies for about three weeks straight. We're done now, and all are okay. Just all different ages. Weird!

Peel the shell away at the air sac end and moisten the membrane with very warm water and a sponge. If there are no veins when you moisten, you can roll the membranne down to the bottom of the egg and then let the chick get out the rest of the way. Put it in a warm bow with a blub shining on it for heat.

Good luck and do not give up on it yet. She will hatch out and more than likely be fine.
