Hello! My sister lives in the township of Chili New York (Rochester, NY). She just recently received a letter from Chili stating that she needed to get rid of her 3 backyard chickens because she does not live on 5 acres or more. Anyone available to help? The chickens provide eggs for their weekend breakfast and are the kids pets. They have a very large backyard and the chickens are well contained.

Hi and :welcome! I am sorry your sister is having to go through this. Unfortunately, the town ordinances clearly state that one must own five or more acres to have chickens.

Your sister could request the town council to reconsider the ordinance, maybe get some friends or neighbors to sign a petition. I haven't ever experienced something like this myself, but from what I know of government I don't think there's much hope.

I copied and pasted the town ordinance in case you wanted to read it yourself :):

Hopefully someone more experienced will be along to answer your question further, and good luck to your sister!
