Huntsville AL,
I've been thinking about starting my very own backyard flock, but cant decide which breed/breeds to choose?!?!
Also i was wondering if i could have a mixed flock or just get 3 of one breed? I will be getting 3 hens from my local feed store but need help on choosing a breed!!I have narrowed it down to these breeds!
-Buff Orpington
-Black Austrolorp
-Barred Rock
Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks - JacksHomestead

Welcome to BYC!

If you like those 3 breeds, they would get along fine mixed together in one flock. It's up to you, do you want to have them all the same or would you like some diversity?

Nice to have you here!

I have Barred Rocks as my main gang, and they are my favorite.. They can be a little spunky, and they like to get out and about, so they aren't exactly lap chickens lol; pretty smart about predators and good egg layers... I love their personalities; they can be talkative and curious, but sometimes moody... Hmmm like their master :D

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I've had all three of those breeds over the years and they are all three great breeds. I slightly prefer the Black Australorps to the other two breeds as they are the most heat hardy (all three breeds are very cold hardy) and the best layers of the three. All three breeds are generally docile, and Australorps and Orpingtons are especially calm and gentle birds. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) all made lap pets of both our Australorps and Orpingtons. As NorthFlChick said, there is no reason why you can't keep all three breeds together in a flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC! I love my Buff Orpingtons, they are very friendly, un-flighty, and lay lots of eggs and cold hardy. I haven't raised any of the other breeds that you have listed. Perhaps you could get a mixed flock - I do, it works out well.

so glad you have joined us.

I started with 3 BR and 3 BO, both breeds have been a joy to raise, but the BO's can go broody more often than I wish they would. They are all so full of surprises, one of my BO's is the bottom of the pecking order and a BR is the #1 gal, but these two are best friends. I would never have expected that connection between the two breeds.

IMO pick the ones that suit your area and your expectations on breed characteristics and the 3 you are thinking about should get along well if raised together.

Good luck in your planning.
