Choosing a breed

Greetings Everyone,
I know this question has been posted so many times in other posts, but instead of reading over 500+ posts, I thought I would just try for a direct approach. I am looking for a dual-purpose (layers and meat) flock and after reading Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens I decided to go with Orpingtons. I will be living in Missouri so I need a breed that can survive the cold, fairly easy to maintain, and have a good disposition. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Orpingtons are one of my favorites. We plan to add a bunch more to our flock this spring! They've also all been great around my kids and such.

Orpingtons would be great for your situation.

Definitely Speckled Sussex. They are dual purpose, cold/weather hardy, and very sweet. This is Kiwi, my SS.

There are so many awesome breeds for backyard chicken keepers that there is almost never a reason to not get whatever chickens are most appealing to you.
