My chicks are now on Ace Hi chick starter mash, since that's what they were eating at the feed store when I got them. With my parrots, cats and horses I've always put a lot of thought into feed, but I'm starting from zero here. I know about the gross characteristics of starter, grow and laying feeds, but nothing about ingredient details and current research... what do you consider when you are choosing a brand and format for a commercial feed, aside from availability and price. What are your favorite products and why?

I personally judge the quality of the feed by how the birds look, act and lay on it. My birds free range so they don't eat much feed at all. It's mainly for rainy days and the occasional snack.

I mean I could buy the best stuff out there and if my birds will not eat it, it's a waste.

Most commercial feed is going to be a complete feed and thus nutrients will be similar. You can supplement with nutridrench in the water as needed.
