Chopped straw in brooder?

Well, I was all set to dump two bags of play sand in my brooder (got them for free off of Freecycle!) when my dad called. We're splitting a chick order so he's prepping a brooder also. He said he'd put part of a bale of straw through his chipper/shredder and the stuff that came out is soft and fluffy like nothing else. He thinks it's going to work much better than shavings (that's what they used last time) as well as being a fraction of the price. SO, he's bringing me a giant trash bag full to try.

Just wondering who has tried it already and what did you think?

I love straw. Good, clean, yellow straw is my favorite. Chopping it as your dad is doing would seem a great idea. It will interesting to see how it works for you.

I used straw in my brooder it seems to work great.
