""Portsmouth Fears Lawsuit If People Get Sick
POSTED: 10:26 am EDT August 6, 2008
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- Portsmouth is standing behind its ban on selling locally raised, uninspected chickens at the city's farmers market.
More than 100 people petitioned the City Council to overrule the health officer's ban. But city attorney Bob Sullivan said the farmers market is on city property, so the city could get sued if someone got salmonella from an uninspected chicken sold there.
People who want locally raised chickens can still buy them at farms that raise them. There's growing interest in locally raised food for reasons including the environment, taste and supporting local farms.
Small chicken farms are exempt from federal licensing and inspection requirements. ""
Yes. Because the FDA does such a great job keeping people safe from salmonella, e coli and other such icks
