Clean-Legged BCMarans--Who's Out There?? Let's Chat!

I would suspect this to be somewaht true since all the original french marans were feather legged. The british had to cross them with other clean legged breeds in order to remove the leg feathering. A marans can be just as pure whether it's feather legged or not. The only difference is to what standard you want to breed to. The french, the british, or the proposed APA standards which call for feathered legs.

All Marans in the French,Continental and Common EU Poultry Standards are feather shanked. The Brown-Red (correct name for Black Coppers) is recognised in all these Standards.

The British Standard calls for clean shanked birds, but only the Silver Cuckoo,Dark Cockoo,Golden Cuckoo & Black are accepted. The BC is not and never has been accepted into the British Standard and is unknown in the UK.

The clean shanked BC appears to be a US innovation.

That is why I am working with them. I am trying to improve the US innovation. Some people do not like feather-legged birds, especially around here. I will have to use some feather-legged and then try to breed it out. Obviously, it will take several years.
