The cage wire is pretty widely spread. Just google Vinyl Coated or PVC coated or Coated Wire.......sometimes there are rolls on ebay...but let me warn you it can be costly. But to me it is worth it. My cages are going to be 1 x .5" galv. wire on the sides and top and 1 x .5" coated wire on the bottom. With sloped floors so eggs roll to the front of the cage. Coturnix are pooping machines and I doubt you want to be cleaning out a cage of shavings 1-2 a week. Not to mention the cost.
But if the cage was larger, relative to the number of birds, it would of course take longer before the poop covered so much of the surface.
