Cleaning a Sand Filled Run???

Thanks everyone...

I got my DE in the mail! So I am going to give that a try along with the Sweet PDZ.

I find that after it rains is when it smells the most. It definatly isn't over powering... just that I notice it.

and... My hubby doesnt' want ANY smells! YIKES

I still have to go out and get a pooper scooper thingy as the rake just isn't working for me.

I'll let you know how it works!

Thanks again!

Hey all,

I just wanted to update you... I think I have figured out a great way to clean my sand filled run. Thanks to all your suggestions. I ended up with combinations of them. Maybe this will help some of you.

I rake it up the top layer in little piles and then use a kitty litter scooper to sift it thru and disgard what I catch.

It works wonders!!

Then I will sprinkle the Sweet PDZ and DE work it in and wa-la! good as new!!

All the sand is fluffy and clean!

Just thought I would share!

Hey Khable,

Thanks for the info...I was thinking, too, that not every kittie litter scoop is created equally. Some are really big and "slotty" which might be perfect for the job. I have one downstairs that I've abandoned for the actual cat box because it doesn't catch all the mini-turds. I've been contemplating it's success in the chickie house. We have pine shavings, so I want the shavings to fall out when I sift.

I was brainstorming the other day about poop-tools and my daughter's sandbox toys also crossed my mind. You know, all those rakes and shovels that lay around. Not sure that she would remember to keep them out of her sandbox afterwards, however.

I know, how about a really expensive fancy pants brand colandar??? Cuisinart?

I think I've seen compost sifters that might work too...I'm sure your awesome coop-builders could rig up a nifty screen thingie for you.

Seems to me I saw a very old antique once, made of dowels and wood cross-bars, somewhat like a horse-stall rake. I bet someone with much more motivation than myself could fashion the perfect rake!

I could go on an on, but I won't.
