Hi,
I'm getting a shed from someone that was converted to a coop years ago. It hasn't had chickens in it in maybe as much as 10 years, but I thought maybe wild birds have been in it, and probably other wild animals as well. I haven't seen it yet, but I plan on pressure washing, spraying with disinfectant, and completely air drying. I've heard that Odoban can be used to disinfect chicken stuff. I have some Odoban, and I know it has quite a bit of fragrance. I can let it air out for several days if need be. I won't be in a hurry to move my chickens. Would you use Odoban, or does anybody have a product that they prefer?
Thanks! I'm just so excited....I'll have a walk-in coop for the first time!!!!!!!!!

sounds like a great start! I would suggest, if you can, to give it a couple coats of exterior paint on the inside (if it is wood? if it's steel disregard!) and give it a good look over for any holes or small areas predators can get in. Let it air out as much as you can for sure before the birds get in :)

I wouldn't use an odor remover. If it's properly clean it won't stink.

I am not familiar with Odoban, but if it's the same sort of thing as Febreeze then it's got powerful perfumes in it that can be EXCEEDINGLY irritating to the lungs. We had serious words with our real estate agent who was selling our home after she sprayed that stuff in our house -- despite having been told not to -- before a showing and nearly put me into the hospital with a serious asthma attack.

Chickens, like all birds, have very delicate respiratory systems.

If you want a good disinfectant go to the farm store and buy something that's made for use around animals. :)

Good idea on the paint! Yeah, I'm not even sure if its wood or not yet, I hope it is. I definitely planned on looking for any micro holes and sealing them up! L
Does your coop have a bad odor?

I haven't actually seen the coop yet, so I don't know if it smells bad. I would mainly be using the Odoban, because it's also a disinfectant and I have it on hand, but now that I think about it, I might see what else I can find or just use hot water.

Wow, I didn't know it was that bad!

Yeah, as I'm typing my chest is hurting just thinking about the fragrance. I totally understand about stuff in the air. I have a breathing condition as well -so yeah I've decided against the Odoban for my chickens' sake, and mine! Thank you!

I want to be sure there aren't any germs that could kill the chickens. If you do decide to disinfect, make sure not to use straight bleach. Diluted bleach or vinegar works fine. Also, there is no harm in disenfecting.
