Cleaning the duck house

I'm looking at different designs for duck housing and I'm curious. What is your cleaning routine like for your duck home and run?

I keep straw and/or pine shavings on the floor of the duck house a few inches deep, when it gets too gross/wet/etc. I rake it out into the duck run. When it gets even worse, I shovel it into my compost tumbler to continue to break down. Eventually it gets tilled into my raised beds.

My ducks stay in the barn in a horse stall at night. During the day, if no one is going to home for a while, they have the whole barn. Whenever anyone is at home, they free-range or are in their 16’ by16’ outdoor run.

As far as cleaning goes, I spot clean (remove all visibly soiled bedding, spray down poop mats if needed, change food and water) daily. I use wood shavings in the barn with either straw or hay for nesting areas. I do a big clean out at least 3 times per year (remove everything, clean it all, replace with all new bedding). The spring cleanout is the most brutal as I use very deep bedding in the winter and winter cleaning, in general, is not as thorough as summer cleaning.

All used bedding gets composted!
