Ok, to keep the birds in the run, I have clipped the wings of those who fly out. Unfortunately, that doesn't stop them. They fly as high as they can, catch onto the fence, flap real hard and climb to the top. Then they are out. I don't have the money or materials to put something on top of the fence.

I did not trim both wings, someone said that if the wings are the same size, they can still fly. I trimmed a little less than half of their pin feathers. Should I try more? I am afraid of making them bleed.

They are not penned all the time, I let them out to forage and free range but I want them back in the run at night so they lay their eggs in the coop and not all over the yard. Sylvia

I know exactly how you feel. I've clipped the wings of my blue laced Wyandotte and they are still scaling a 7 ft fence. The only advice I can give you is to do as I am going to do and clip a little more off.

I will give it a go and let you know if it works. Thanks.

Please do. The article I read said that if both wings are clipped, they can still fly. I will sure do both wings if there is a lot of evidence that it works. The other way, just made sense, if the wings were off balance they shouldn't be able to fly but mine do. Sylvia

Oh well I have nothing to lose so ill do it on one certain ' repeat offender ' tonight and let you know. If cetrarchid says it works then I'm prepared to give it a go.

I tested exactly that statement and it was incorrect. One wing does reduce flying ability enough for some but biggest advantage is it takes less time. Just make certain cuts made are close enough.
