I have a 2-3month old americauna chick. Removed her from the flock. Her eye was closed. She eventually opened slightly but still swollen. Any suggestions of what could be wrong and how to treat. Thanks

Do you notice any coughing, sneezing or mucous?
Is the inside of her beak clear of canker or lesions?
Have you ever had any birds that had symptoms of respiratory illness?

She certainly doesn't look like she's feeling well. General care for swelling of the eye would be to flush with saline and apply an eye ointment like Terramycin. Look for swelling under the eye that may be pus and needs to be pressed out. A peck or injury to the eye or getting debris in it can also cause swelling, so look for any wounds.

I would make sure she's drinking and eating well. She may need to be placed where it's relatively warm since she's not well - caging her with the flock might be o.k. if you think she will be warm enough.

Try to get some photos of her poop when you can too please. Keep us posted.

What does her poop look like? Is she eating and drinking? Are the others picking on her? Do you have more than one feeder and waterer available? I would try to get her eating something by taking her aside, and offering scrambled egg, wet chicken feed, and vary that with a little tuna or canned cat food. A chicken vitamin such as Poultry NutriDrench 1-2 ml daily for a few days would be good. Or 1/2 vitamin B complex tablet crushed into a little food or water would be helpful and might increase her appetite.

If she is not eating, I would start some Corid in her water to treat her for possible coccidiosis. That is found in feed stores. Dosage is 2 tsp of the liquid or 1.5 tsp of the Corid powder per gallon of water for 5-7 days. Symptoms of coccidiosis are lethargy, standing puffed up, no appetite, and runny droppings.
