Cocci or malnutrition?

Need help with diagnosing our 8 week old chick sick symptoms!

I posted this past Friday about her lethargy and lack of eating and drinking. [New to this group so I’m not sure how to link the prior post! ] She puffs herself up and sleeps a lot. She also had mucus poops. We were able to get CORID treatment started Sunday. I also brought her inside last night so she could get better rest. I also gave her the COVID water and a corid drench by syringe. I do it by letting little drops go into her beak from the side. New to chickens so not skilled with other methods yet!!

So far she seems to have better poop, so it seems like the CORID may be working.

BUT she is losing weight and still . She went from 500g yesterday to 470g today even after a big morning feed. I brought her outside with her friends and she ate a bunch and drank and seemed to be almost totally herself, but within a few hours she stopped eating and drinking and just stood around puffed up again.

I repeated the CORID drench and gave her some CORID water.

I brought her back inside and made her a yummy mix of corid water, medicated starter feed (been on since day 1), mealworms, and a little plain yogurt. She seems to be eating it a little more and sleeping. She isn’t chirping loudly to get out and see her friends.

I’m worried that there is a bigger issue than Cocciodis going on. She has been our smallest chick since and grown slower than others…even stopped growing a bit at times. She feels almost boney to me and she is much light than the rest. We recently moved them all to an outside coop full time and started free ranging and I’m just wondering if she is really struggling with the change. The other are loving it, but she seems to be really sliding downhill. It seems like she is the bottom of the pecking order because she never pushes in for food and often avoids the chaos. She is not bullied. Occasionally our older hen will peck her if she is in the way, but the hen doesn’t persist (just a little peck) and she does it to all our chicks!!

Do you think she is suffering from malnutrition? If so, what can I do to support her if she isn’t eating enough to hold her weight or grow?

Or is this normal for Coccidiosis during recovery?

Should I keep her totally separated for now till she is 100% or take her out for short play dates?

I’m worried that separating her will only worsen her isolation in the flock and perhaps start the others bullying her.

Thank you SO much for your help. I wish I had a bunch of chicken experts living next door, but this online community is a lifesaver!!!

Here's your other thread:

I just copied that ^ from the address bar of my browser, and pasted it into this post. Something automatically turns it into a clickable link.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions about helping the chick :(

Please post photos of the chick and her poop.
On your other thread you received good advice to start the Corid. I would continue with that and finish the treatment.

This is her this morning. She does well in the mornings. Eats, drinks and acting almost 100%, but within a few hours she seems back to not eating or drinking much.

This is her poop this morning. Back to normal I think! Yay.

This was her poop on Saturday.

This is how she is a few hours after waking up. Stands mostly puffed up. Today she seems a little more active so far, but when resting she looks like this.

Since the CORID seems to be making a difference in improving her poop, I’m wondering if perhaps she caught this weeks ago and it just festered slowly. she started slowing in her growth 3-4 weeks ago but had no other symptoms till we moved her outside a week ago. It seems like all the chicks aren’t eating as much since we started free ranging them a week ago.

I’m planning to bring her inside to eat a yummy mix (corid water, feed, and mealworms crushed) a few times during the day today and syringe her some corid water and will do one last day of the drench (day 3).

Could she be malnourished from cocci? Or would you suspect some other underlying cause for her struggles to gain weight?

Should I do anything different with her treatment to help her recover? I know I shouldn’t give vitamins during the 2 courses of treatments, but after or between?

Thanks again!!!

I had just given her 3ml of corid water and she pooped like this shortly after. She hadn’t eaten in a while. I’m trying to encourage her to eat now. She is nibbling on some tasty mush (corid water, feed, and mealworms). Seems to like it more with a little plain Greek yogurt too. Hope that doesn’t interfere with the medicine, but she is eating it a little so that’s good!

Is it normal for their poops to go back and forth from clean to mucus/bloody when recovering from cocci?
Could this be worms? I was given a dewormer in case from the feed store but haven’t used it yet. Worth it to treat everyone for that too?

So far all other chicks and our hen are not showing any symptoms.
I feel like a crazy mom over analyzing every symptom my kid has. I just want to see her thrive and of course I’m worried when things aren’t always improving 😰

Really appreciate your responses and those of others!!

Yes, coccidiosis can sometimes affect them for a long time in a subclinical case. It is hard to know if that has been what has caused this problem over time or not, without lab work (a fecal float done by a vet.) My vet does a fecal float on my dogs whenever I bring them in once a year. You could schedule a vet visit for that and bring along a baggie with some droppings, and beg them to do it. It would tell you if there are worms or coccidia. They also could do a test on it for enteritis. Once you finish with the Corid, I would offer some probiotics and chick vitamins for a week. Here is some reading about coccidiosis:
