So, about a month ago, my fenced in flock (13 hens and 1 roo of 1.5y olds and 10m olds) started with super stinky diarrhea. Took a sample into the vet. Found coccidia. Treated the flock with Sulmet (Vet said to ask the Feed Store about treatment with regard to the egg laying issues). Feed store told me Sulmet. Unfortunately, I didn't follow the Sulmet directions exactly as labeled (i.e., I didn't dilute it after the first day, but kept at full strength). So, I feared I may have overdosed the chickens.
The laying had stopped with the coccidia before the Sulmet, but about a week after Sulmet, EVERYONE started MOLTING!!!!!???!!!! The vet thought the molting could be due to stress with the coccidia. Or was it due to an overdose of Sulmet? Who knows?
Good news is that a month has passed now, and all of the chickens are looking MUCH better. No diarrhea. Molting seems to have stopped/decreased. And yesterday, some of the hens began LAYING again!!!! I figure these are all good signs!
So, question is, now that I've read up on all of the people who would NEVER give Sulmet to their chickens, and knowing that I may have overdosed the chickens, IS IT SAFE TO EAT THE EGGS? The wait time has been more than 4 weeks. Should I be pitching the first week or so of eggs? Or, as some have indicated on this list, is it never safe to eat eggs once Sulmet has been introduced? Any increased risk in light of the molting and potential overdose of Sulmet?
I have 5 small children, and we eat eggs like crazy! However, I certainly don't want to expose my kiddos to anything that's going to harm them.
I am having difficulty finding information about Sulmet online.
Thanks!
Tiffany
