I have a 3 wk old chick that has a pushed out rear end that is a little bloody. Smell is a little off. She is chirping a distressed sound. I have a lot of chicks but have been diligent in cleaning out the pens everyday, because I don't want to feed medicated.

I ran her rear under water and pushed out the impacted poo, which was a lot and very disgusting. I have isolated her and don't see anyone else with a problem so far.

Could this be something else? I am treating her with a sulfer drug in the water.

Thanks

can someone help me with this one? or should I ask somewhere else?

thanks

What Sulfa drug are you treating her with? It could be an impaction or coccidiosis. Are the feathers fluffed out and the eyes closed? Eating and drinking?

sounds more like pasty butt (constipation). What you did was good. She could use electrolytes or vitamins, but it doesn't sound like she needs the antibiotic. Try using about a teaspoon of table sugar in a pint of water, and make sure she/he has access to fresh water all the time. The vent prolapse is probably from the buildup of poo; it's good you got that out. Put some neosporin on the vent if it is still bloody or looks "torn" or you see open skin. GENTLY push the prolapse back in toward the body if it is still distended. You may have to repeat this a few times a day until the natural muscle tone returns. Good luck with your baby!
ETA: keep her warm and protected from drafts, too.

Medicated starter has amprolium in it to help control the cocciodis so young chicks can build an immunity to it. I agree that it sounds like pasty butt and a chapped bottom, but if she's passing blood in her stools it's time to get a bit concerned.
