Been surfing BYC for a year now and have loved it and learned so much. I just joined a few minutes ago because I am really worried about my chick.
I bought 3 EE 10 days ago. They are all now about 20 days old. Yesterday one of the chicks started looking weak and lethargic. We thought it was a heat thing as my husband had added a screen to the top of the bin to keep one of them from jumping out. I held her close to lamp and changed the coop a bit to get more heat in. She perked up for the evening but this morning she looks even worse. She can only stand for a second then collapses. She is breathing really fast and has her eyes closes. I haven't noticed any funny poop, not to say there isn't any. I am thinking that it is coccidiosis, from what I have read on BYC.
Does anyone agree?
Is she able to recover from this?

Any thoughts or help would be great. I am going to head to our local feed store for some medication when it opens (in a few hours, ugh).

Thanks
Renee

So sad, went to take a picture of her to post and it looks like she passed away in the last few minutes. I just want to cry, I am not a farmer, these are pets, with names.

Is there anything I need to do for the other chicks? They all seem healthy and active.

Renee

Definitely get the Corid(amprolium) and treat for Coccidiosis. Corid is found in the cattle section. Dose for Corid 9.6% liquid is 2 tsp per gallon of water, dose for Corid 20% powder is 1-1.5 tsp per gallon of water. Treat ALL birds for 5 days,DO NOT give vitamins during treatment as they interfere with the ability of coccidiostat to work, give vitamins after treatment is complete. Make sure medicated water is the only source of drinking water.

Check her for crop issues just to rule it out. Crop should be full at night(after eating all day)should be empty in morning(before eating).

My condolences on her passing,(just saw your new post)very heartbreaking.

For future reference if you ever suspect Coccidiosis, never wait medicate immediately(treating for cocci will not harm birds, but not treating may result in deaths)by the time you notice symptoms, bird has already been ill for a couple of days.

Yes, crop was very full. looked very swollen and distended. My husband thought it was just feathers fluffed up but it was bigger than I have seen in her before.
She was fine all day yesterday then in the evening started to look weak. Then looked better when I went to bed. If this was coccidiosis how when will I know? Before it gets to late.
If it is a crop problem what could I have done?
Thank you so much
Renee

Just examined the crop on the chick and it was empty when she passed away.
