I just got a sweet Cochin hen in hopes that she will one day be a broody. To encourage this, I gave her her own pen (It's about 3 ft long by 18 in wide and three feet tall. It has lots of hay on one end, where she has made a nest and is laying a clutch of eggs (I added a few, too). Then at the other end, it has room to walk around, and that end is where the feeder and water bottle hang. The pen is built into the wall in a secure, 14 x 14 room, so I open the door to her pen in the morning so that she can get out and scratch around if she wants.

So far, this is what she does, every day, for the past week.....stays in her small pen, by the food and water. She will come up to see me when I stand in her doorway, takes treats, talks, etc. She is SO SWEET. She acts perfectly relaxed, and eats and drinks just fine. She is laying an egg every day, but is not sitting on the eggs. However, the past couple of mornings, when I come in to check on her, the eggs are moved around. Yesterday, six of them were moved over into the corner (about six inches away, still in the straw), into a second smaller "nest" that she had made. Today, three were still in the smaller nest, but three were moved BACK into the original nest.

Does this mean anything?

If she isn't brooding then the location to the eggs one nest or the other, doesn't matter. How many eggs does she have in there presently? Maybe something is driving her to try out different amount of eggs in the nest. It might be quite a while till, or if she goes broody, you may want to change out the eggs once and a while.

Maybe she's bored! If you have other chickens I'd keep them together if you can. They are such social animals. Being with the others shouldn't affect her broodiness.

It could also be the number of eggs. 14 is way too many. Her size will be the determining factor on how many she can effectively sit. Most hens keep around 10 eggs. My small hens only sit 3 to 4. One of my regular size Cochin girls only sat 6 max. It was her first time to hatch out some chicks so unfortunately she only had one that actually made it. I have a bantam that is sitting just two eggs right now.
Do you have a rooster?

Thanks for all the info. I cleaned out her nest and have started her off fresh. I did move three of my 8-week old chicks in with her, and she is just so happy about having them in there.

I do not have a rooster that I let near her, I have a Barred Rock trio. I was just hoping that if she decides to go broody, she can help me hatch out my Barred Rock and guinea eggs.
