Hi everyone!
We got our 6 girls a lovely buff orpington fella at the weekend and were told that he didnt start crowing until about 7.....yea right!!! He starts at about 6, if we're lucky! Now we knew what we were getting into getting a rooster but we're just a bit worried that he'll wake up the neighbours- they did say they didnt mind us getting chickens but im sure that theyre fed up already! Weve had to bring him in the last couple of nights to sleep in the kitchen so its just us that get woken up but I just wondered what everyone else does to extend the peace and quiet until theyre actually let out of their coop? He is shut up at night with the ladies in a pretty dark coop so we thought that would make a difference but obviously not! help please!

Well, it's getting light earlier each day, and he'll be crowing earlier each day. Roosters crow, and big roosters like yours crow rather loudly. He may mellow out as he matures and testosterone levels off. It's always a problem keeping roosters if you have close neighbors. Is there any possibility of placing him in a crate in a darkened cellar?

Maybe he started crowing at 7 am when the sun was coming up at 7am. That doesn't bode well for the long days of summer when dawn is even earlier. I suppose you could try sound insulating the coop.

I recently read a post about a rooster who was trained to come in every evening and went into a kennel in the closet under their stairwell.

That sounds good!he is very tame, ive actually just had a cuddle with him before bringing him in for the night. Whats the easiest way to sound proof?

Ive actually just bought him a small dog cage for when hes indoors so will try popping him in that but unfortunately the dogs live under the stairs so thats out of the question!will have to find a dark place for him
