I have 2 speckled sussex, 5 weeks old, and one has a more developed, pinker comb + more white on the breast. I don't see much difference in the tails or legs. Anybody have thoughts on sexes?

I have 4 brinsea eco glow brooders, I think they're absolutly fantastic. Before we've had heat lamps but they heat up an area that was too big for my brooder pens, and I didn't have enough room to hang them up.
These are great though as you can fit alot of chicks under them and adjust the height as they get older. I also prefer to use them as they reduce the fire risk (as its only a warm plate) and take up less room. The only downside to them is that the chicks like to sit on top of them and make it a mess, but that problem is easily resolved :)

Bummer. Thanks though.

Regarding the EcoGlow: I was very happy with it. I had to use a heat lamp the first few days, as the brooder arrived after the chicks, and I found the heat lamp to be a bit of a pain. My chicks are inside and I had to adjust the height of the lamp a few times a day because of the changes in the ambient room temp. I was always worried about it getting too hot or cold. Aside from better temperature control, I like that it is more natural for the birds - they real world isn't constantly 95 degrees (and then 90, 85, etc.), but a variety of temperatures. Nor is the world constantly lit red for weeks either.

I only have 5 chicks, and don't plan on getting any more, and I'm glad I got it.
