I have a 21-week old Bresse cockerel that is otherwise a great guy to all the pullets - shares snacks, shepherds them into the coop at night, leads them around the yard and keeps an eye on the sky. I was hoping to use him for breeding, so i could hatch my own birds for meat and eggs.

However, when he tries to mount them, he jumps up, gets everything into position, the girls are willing and ready, and then…he just hops off. I also have a Wyandotte cockerel, same age, who actually “finishes” every time i see him do it, and all my eggs seem to be fertilized so far. I assume they’re all Wyandotte mixes instead of Bresse mixes. (Not hatching any yet because they are still pullet eggs)

Is this just an age thing? Do you think he will ever figure it out? Or should i look for another Bresse rooster for my future breeding flock?

My rooster mated a mirror and started wing dancing my cat and thin air. You can’t really get worse then that.

Okay, but really, its an age thing. He will get over it. Mine had no idea what to do and even accidentally mated the wrong end. He will get better and eventually learn, just give him time.

Since it's a family friendly forum I've struggled with how to word a post on the crazy things my Hackle cockerels were spending time on. From a fluffy pink chair set out for trash day (seems almost normal compared to later objects) to just scoot-dancing along the ground with a leaf in his beak (one did that many times a day).
Some of it was absolutely hilarious, but there are kids here, lol.
