*if* the sperm in an egg is the black spot about the size of a coarse grain of black pepper .. which was our first concern of eggs getting fertilized.
Only seeing 1 fertile egg in a dozen? Yet we saw them regularly mating?? So one day we were sitting out back and just happened to see him get on a girl. Looked normal, she squatted for him, her tail went up he began his motion.. and we could plainly see her vent ready... but he never touched it, he was positioned just above it???
Then we began to wonder if this was the issue with fertile eggs? He is definitely a fertile rooster!! He has had the red leg stripes since 6 mos old. But since we are now aware there might be an issue, we have purposely watching his technique .. and most of the times we can see from the back of the girls view.. she is completely ready and available but his 'cloaca kiss' is above where it needs to be? Will this correct itself or will he just be an ineffective boy? )-: : - (

Whatever coarse grain of black pepper you saw in that egg is not a sign of fertility.
You need to examine the yolks and look for the blastodisc or blastoderm.
Fertile eggs look like this:

This image shows a fertile vs. infertile egg.

Good question for it allows us to correct your misconception. You are not looking for sperm, it would be too small to see with the naked eye anyway. You are looking for the bull's eye which is evidence that the ova has been impregnated with a sperm to form an embryo.

This thread might help you determine if the egg is fertile and what the bulls eye looks like.

Could you post a photo of that black spot. Maybe we can tell you what it is.
