How do roos mate with chickens? I want to make sure because my young light brahma has been changing behavior with the hens. He pecks at the back of their heads, appears to be trying to hold them down, and tries to mount them. I hear that the process is really quick and around 15 seconds. So if he is then how soon will they lay?

That is mating behavior. Males mature faster than females. Males will generally start mating behavior anywhere from 3 months to 5 months, whereas a pullet won't be ready until around 6 months.

If your female's combs are growing and getting red, then it won't be long. Bright red is a sign of sexual maturity.

All you ever didnt want to know about how things work down there:
