So I'd love to know everyone's vote on what they prefer for keeping a chicks membrane moist during an assisted hatch and why. I've personally used both. I started out with coconut oil. But noticed it caused the membrane to get very hard often times causing more of a problem for the chick to hatch. So I tried Vaseline and wow what a difference. I don't need to reapply and it never drys out resulting in the chick hatching smoothly. I'm just curious 🙂

It probably hardens because pure coconut oil hardens at room temperature. I know an incubator isn't room temp but it shows it would firm up before something like olive oil, which is what I would use.
