Cold Coop

I couldn't heat the coop enough during the winter. I bought 2 chickencoop heaters that look like flat screen TVs, safe to be next to chickens, but they didn't get warm enough, so I kept the chooks in the garage until I got workshop overhead light fixtures and red heat lightbulbs and use heavy duty extension cords so the cords don't overheat. I attached the lamp cords on the ceiling of the coop and can plug them in if needed. This worked great. Their coop was colder than the outside, like a cave.

Share are you located and what is your coop like?

We added a secured heat lamp in our walk-in coop. We centered it above the 2 highest roosts. We had it plugged into a thermostat so that it would only turn on when it got below 15F. Generally, chickens don’t need added heat, they need a draft free and dry -but well ventilated - coop -with some natural light that can enter during daylight hours. We added the heat lamp bc one family member insisted, so the compromise was the thermostat regulating when it turned on. In our case, when the heat lamp was not on, the coop was warmer than outside...still cold and not “warm”, but not as terrible as outside. This was true even during polar vortex and our regular temp dipped to -18F (not windchill), and the winds were howling!

Give us some more info!

Their coop was colder than the outside,
Did you mean warmer?

Ventilation is way more important than heat.
The only thing I heat is the waterer to keep it from freezing solid.

Oh and...Welcome to BYC! @jgarner1327

Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!
