cold tolerance?

just was wondering, how do guineas deal with cold? mine won't roost anywhere but the trees, and its supposed to snow next week, trying not to worry!

Guineas are pretty cold tolerant. Do they have access to a shelter? Ours always go in the hen house if they get to cold.

thanks- yes they have the covered porch, the coop is attached to that, and the barn- silly guineas!

Mine roost in the trees year round too. We often have wind chills well below zero.

Ours roost in the cedar trees year round. It gets in the single digits here quite often in the winter, along with snow and ice, and they've been fine and survived several winters with us.

whew! thanks, they did fine last nite, so one less worry. Do you feed them differently in the winter?

I don't feed mine at all in the spring thru fall. When it's very cold or snow covered I throw some scratch grains out to them.

ok, they do get that and black sunflower seed since the chickens get that- so they should be good for the winter..

Well they might be cold tolerant (we're at about 15 degrees)but mine are a bunch of sissies. We have about an inch of snow on the ground for the last 3 days, and they just screech out the front door at it. I keep telling them it's going to be worst. Poor things had to be purchased by some one from northern Wisconsin instead of down south.

Good to know about the sunflower seed, it's one of the few things they like as treats.

ours will come look in the front door and chatter about it, they love thier black sunflower seed- other goodies are ok but i'll call heerree guineas! and they will answer and come on the run squawking ...LOL! they actually seem to be trained to it
