I’m a new chicken mom. I live in Texas, and our weather can fluctuate drastically this time of year….85 during the day, then a front comes through, and it’s in the 40s that night. We have 6 young hens that are around 4 1/2 months old. Two are from one breeder and weren’t vaccinated. The other four were vaccinated. To be honest, when we got our first pullets, I wasn’t aware that chickens could be vaccinated. We got 2 barred rocks and a golden comet first. One of the barred rocks got sick within a few days, and died a couple of days later. The second one also got sick and has had ongoing respiratory issues. Both of them got sick after a first weather change. The golden comet has been fine. I’ve been giving Henrietta very small oral doses of Liquimycin 200 mixed with water and she gets better, but she still has a clear runny nose. Each time the temperature changes, she gets sick again. She’s got a little cough today, and I’m really concerned about tonight…it’s supposed to drop into the lower 30s. Should I bring her inside with a friend so she’s not lonely? Or leave her in the coop? She’s so sweet! I don’t want to lose her.
On a side note, the others have shown no signs of sickness. Also, do you have any suggestions for treatment of Henrietta’s respiratory problems? Tractor Supply is my only local source for medicines. Thanks!
