Collecting Eggs

I noticed that my chickens weren't laying as much as they should this spring, when I usually see a big increase. Turns out that my corgi was stealing eggs, as many as 3 a day! It made me SO mad!!!! I tried to deal with it, and I figured that it was a small price to pay for him protecting our flock, but a few weeks ago it was driving me SO CRAZY, that I started collecting eggs 4 or 5 times a day. So that he doesn't have a chance to steal anything.

I was wondering, does anybody else gather this much, and do you think that it creates an increase or drop in egg production? Or does it stay the same? I think I have noticed an increase, but then again the dog isn't stealing eggs any more. I was just interested to see what people have to say. Thanks everybody!

It gets pretty hot here and during the summer I will collect eggs every couple of hours till bed time. My girls lay about the same amount whether I collect once or 10 times.

Have you thought about a roll-away-nest box, its were the egg rolls safely to a compartment that can also be secured. That way you don't have to go out as often to collect the eggs. there are lots of homemade ones that look to be easy to build. I plan on building me some next year.

Yeah, actually my great grandparents used to run a huge egg business, back in the 70s and all the equipment is still there. Including about 10,000 roll away nest boxes. I really want to get some out here, but I haven't gotten a chance yet. That would be ideal for me, someday....

I collect my eggs before work in the morning, on my lunch break around 12:30, when I get home about 4:30 and again before I lock them up for the night. I have missed some of the times and still get same amount of eggs. I collect so much because i'm afraid of my hens breaking an egg by mistake and eating it. I want layers not egg eaters.
