i live in Alaska and want to light my run and hen house during the winter with Christmas style string lights. I would like to use a multi color for the outside run and a white for the inside of the house. Would the multi color lights still produce the light needed for egg production and do the white lights need to be a certain spectrum. Any input would help.

Just the general precautions when buying christmas lights. You don't want them to explode, you don't want them to die, you don't want them to be hard to put up, ect.

Most general, and most important, caution is to be very careful how you power the lights.
Heat lamps are the number one fire risk in coops,
hinky electrical cords and connections are the second.

I'd use white lights on a timer inside the coop if you want them to function as supplemental light for winter laying.
Here's a pretty good article on supplemental lighting.
