Not sure if this is the right place to ask a color question, but seemed the best fit. I have a black silkie cockerel that has grown in neck feathers with silver tips. Is there a technical term for this coloration? Would it be considered ticking?

It still would be a mixed color. Black is all black. Any tipping is a sign it isn't pure, but I'm no expert. Hopefully someone else can help.

That is a Silkie. Possibly what they call a blue silkie but I can't see enough of it. They are the friendliest chicken I've ever raised, and I have three young males I bought last fall. I love them and they'll sit on your lap if you spend time with them.

I must have read your post wrong. There is a breed of Silkie that is specifically black. Maybe your, like mine, is "mixed".

Yeah, definitely not a show quality black. But all I wanted was a pet. I hatched this guy and he is total velcro chicken. Still lives inside (plans got derailed and he will be going out with my current set of chicks), loves to be petted and purr, and gives hugs. Someday he'll realize he is a chicken but I hope all this bonding will keep him cuddly.
