Colored Rangers, can you tell me more? I think I want to get some from a friend, but as odd as it sounds I am very nervous about eating a chicken I have raised. I have never tasted fresh chicken even though I have had chickens quite a while.

we got the red broilers from ideal - they grew fast and free ranged. we just processed 'em so the taste test isnt in yet.

we liked that they werent as creepy and weird as the cornish x's tho

:)

J.M. Hatchery (www.jmhatchery.com) seems to be the place to go, although S&G Poultry (www.sandgpoultry.com) may also be a good alternative.

I have 150 of the Colored Range Broilers from J.M. and I'm very happy with them. We'll see how much they weigh when I process them at 12 and 13 weeks, in October, but from the few I raised last year, I think I can expect dressed weights of about 5 to 5.5 lbs on average.

Not all colored rangers are the same. If you're getting some from a friend that didn't get them from J.M. or S&G, I would be very skeptical. At 12 weeks, you'll probably get dressed weights of about 3-4 lbs with any other type of "Colored Ranger", maybe even less. But if that works well for you, do it! I resell mine, so size matters.
