I have a pair of guineas 1 pied and 1 pearl they hatched out keets and 1 is a lavender. They are so pretty but I was wondering if maybe we had a traveling salesman that I missed. Just wandering? My pair stay side by side all the time and if for some reason they get seperated one (not sure if its the male or female) one starts yelling and you better watch your head cause one is going to come in for a landing like an airplain. Its sooooo funny. we know to watch out but guest start ducking like crazy.

I know! The guineas are the funniest things!

I've really enjoyed mine.

I don't know much about guinea genetics, but I am guessing that yours probably had a recessive lavender gene somewhere in the background. Lucky you! That means each time they hatch out, you'll be getting a surprise!

This is true when they hatched they were mixed and I only have 2 a male and female. Are guineas like geese and only mate for life or are the males like roos and mate with alot of diff. hens?

Mine tend to stick with their specific mates. I don't know if that is because I had a pair, then got another adult pair, and they just stayed together, or if they naturally pair off.

I don't think they are as bonded as geese are, but my head male will defend my head female in a heartbeat!

Pearl guineas can really carry most any color gene and not show it. There are a few dominant genes that will show up over pearl like the pied but otherwise you have no idea what a pearl is carrying and if both your guineas have the same recessive genes you can get that color. They could lay nearly anything or they could only produce pearls. You never know when you are dealing with animals that show a very dominant color like that.
