Hello,

I have questions about two of my chickens.

Chicken #1 (barred rock) received suggestions from here of treating for flavus back in the fall. Does this comb just look kind of crusty and unusual as a result of that treatment, in your opinion? I just brought her in for a warm washcloth and some Vaseline, and some of the crust does flake off with washing, but I don’t want to be too forceful. She is not currently laying, and I know the corporation could also be due to her recent molt and the winter weather.

This small black patch just appeared today on chicken #2 (golden comet). Does this appear to be frostbite? (It’s brutally cold here today.) Just put Vaseline on all combs, which I should have done earlier.

Thanks for your help!

The crust on the comb of hen #1 could be favus, but it also could be from an injury from rubbing the comb on something like metal fencing. Have you been using an antifungal cream? Could the cream have frozen and caused frostbite? The comb on #2 looks like an injury.

Sorry, I see that the pictures loaded in a strange order. To clarify, frostbite question related to chicken in photos 1, 3, 4, and favis chicken is photo 2.

I don’t think it would be from metal fencing, but are you suggesting that small black patch could be favus as well?

Chicken in photo 2 was treated with micronazole cream back in the fall, so no risk of frostbite them. We’ve just let it be since then, as she was having mobility issues and our focus shifted to that.
