Should I be looking at the combs and wattles to enlarge just before my girls begin to lay? My pullets are 17 weeks and have so little in that department that I can't imagine them beginning to lay anytime soon. Will a girl with immature looking comb and wattles lay?

I have heard both, but the general majority says that the combs and wattles are quite grown, very red and "full".

I don't think the girls with an immature comb will lay. You would be surprised how fast the comb and wattle will grow between 17 and 20 weeks. One day you will look at them and they will be big and red.

This somewhat depends on the breed. Some breeds never get a very large or bright comb and wattles. What breed are you raising?
