I have 6 - 9wk old buffs & I had 2 -6 wk old leg horns,(had 2) Well 2 days ago the small leg horn just died, laying over her perch, no idea why.
Anyhow now the other one is acting crazy still, I used the mirror idea & that deffinitly helped.
but I'm asking now is;
Can I put her in w/ the other 6 buffs? they free range most of the day here & I think she'll follow them around ok, but will they accept her ok & then at nite too.??
she looks to have all her feathers & I've been letting her outside daytime in a seperate cage & they nose each other but She Wants Out.of there too.
What do I watch for & do I bring her in the hs at nite, she'll be hard to catch.
Any idea's for little legger?

I would put one of the older chicks in with her now and leave them together for a week or so- then move them both at the same time over with the flock. There is only a three week difference so that isn't too bad but when you put one new bird in it is hard on them. So you will be putting two "new" birds in and it will be easier on the Leghorn I believe.

I would put them where they can see the larger group and vice versa so as to acquaint them with each other.

Thanks, I was thinking there should be an easier way for the leghorn. I don't like doing 1 by themself on anything..I will do that, one of the buffs is smaller than the rest.

Well, I tried putting one buff w/ my leghorn in the cage today, No that didn't work to good. The buff was just pecking the leghorn up pretty bad & she had no where to go, so I got it out quick.
I would just introduce free ranging but I'll never catch the leghorn then & if it don't go in w/ the rest who no's where it'll end up.
Tomarrow I'll try pening it in the coop while the others are outside ??

I would try to put a buff in there in a week or two with your Leghorn (in other words try again later). Your younger chicken is only suffering from the timidity of youth. As she ages she will become better about defending herself. I would not put her in with the buffs again right now, even in a pen.

Ok. I'll give her some more time, but as she gets older so do they.lol
She really wants to be loose, but I just can't do it...

If you can swing keeping her in a dog cage inside the coop with food and water for awhile that is the best way. It will be "her" coop too when she is released and the others may accept her more readily than if she comes out of nowhere.

My above post where I said I would not put her in with them "even in a pen" was referring to running loose with the others in a pen.

Ok, So rite now I have her in a rabbit cage in the yard where everybody runs all day. & they do pec thru the cage to her but can't
get to her,so that's good. Rite now at nite I bring her into the house in her old pen,she sleeps good,( cause of all the air all day I suspect)
So Maybe I could put a dog crate in the coop for nite time, you thinkin ? That's the only time the Buffs are in the coop anymore.
