My 2 buff orpingtons are just starting to get their combs, little nubs....do they have to be fully developed before they begin laying? What is "squatting"?

They will be much larger and bright red when they are ready to begin laying.

Squatting is the hen's signal to the rooster that she will submit to him. She squats down (some like a pancake) and holds her wings out a little bit. Some of mine stomp their feet when they squat. If they are squatting for you, then they look at you as their rooster. You can pet them when they squat and they will fluff up their feathers when you are done. Eggs are soon to follow after the squat!
