I was wondering if comets were a particular breed or a mix. Our feedstore has some baby comets & some labeled as comet roosters but the baby roos look entirely different.

The roosters look different because they are supposed to. The Golden Comet aka, red sex link, is a hybrid, cross bred bird where the chicks can be sexed at hatch. The pullets will be rusty colored whereas the cockerels are white.

This is a common sex link, or sex at hatch bird. It is not a breed. Typically, they are excellent layers, often used in commercial hen operations.

Thank you. The roosters weren't white tho. They were golden with stripes down their backs and some even had blotches of black on their faces

In that case, I'd say they are a local bunch of birds. Perhaps second or third generation birds from a flock somewhere.

Here is a Golden SexLink page from one of the many hatcheries that sell such birds, under various names.
